How baby gift-giving has changed

For many years now in the United States and Australia, it has become common practice to send a beautifully gift wrapped baby gift from a specialist baby gift company instead. Friends and family prefer to spend money on a baby gift that is either practical or beautiful and that will last and be remembered. This type of baby gift- giving has been particularly popular in the USA because there, it is traditional to host a baby shower for the mother-to-be. This means that friends and family usually give two baby gifts, a baby shower gift and another baby gift after the baby has been born.

A whole new range of baby businesses have grown out of this change in baby gift-giving, not only in the United States but also here in the UK where baby showers are starting to become popular too. Here, some companies specialise in putting together baby gift baskets, a themed collection of gifts that are presented in a stylish wicker basket. Other companies have developed baby gift hampers, using traditional hamper wicker baskets instead. There are even baby gift companies that specialise in putting together ‘nappy cakes’. These look like wedding cakes but are actually made out of layers of disposable nappies! Hidden within each layer are extra items such as rattles and dummies. A relatively new baby gift concept are baby flower bouquets which are put together using multi-coloured baby socks.
